Krystal Kalt,
MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC
“Curiosity about people is what brought me to psychiatry.”
MY BACKGROUND
A career built across the full landscape of care.
I’m Krystal Kalt, MSN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and founder of RiverWalk Psych.
I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, and earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2008.
My nursing career has included wound care, healthcare administration, a brief time in labor and delivery, and psychiatry in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Each experience shaped how I care for people and deepened my understanding of vulnerability and the human experience, but psychiatry was where my curiosity found a home.

WHY PSYCHIATRY?
The science guides us, and the person teaches us the rest.
I chose psychiatry because I was drawn to its complexity. I've also always believed in adding a little more kindness where I can, and psychiatry gave me a meaningful place to do both.
That perspective still shapes the way I practice today. Evidence gives us a foundation, but understanding the individual—their experiences, patterns, goals, and response to treatment—helps determine where we go from there. There is rarely a single answer.
A BOOK THAT INSPIRED ME
"The river has taught me to listen, from it you will learn it as well."
-Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha
Sometimes understanding comes not from knowing more, but from listening more closely.
BECOMING A PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER
A deeper commitment to understanding.
I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University in 2019, specializing in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing across the lifespan. I began practicing as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in 2020.
Since then, I’ve worked with people across different stages of life and have seen how meaningful psychiatric care can become when someone feels heard, understood, and involved in their treatment.
WHY I CREATED RIVERWALK PSYCH
Personal. Collaborative. Unhurried.
I created RiverWalk Psych to offer psychiatric care that feels personal, collaborative, and unhurried.
Medication may be part of treatment, but care should also help you recognize patterns, understand your needs, develop perspective, and make informed decisions aligned with your values.
That is the kind of psychiatry I believe in.
“There should be enough space for people to tell their stories and enough curiosity to understand what those stories reveal.”
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME
Care with attention and purpose.
You can expect a supportive, attentive environment where you can comfortably discuss your experiences without needing to have everything figured out first.
I want you to understand your diagnosis, your treatment options, and the reasoning behind recommendations.
My role is not simply to give you a prescription and a follow-up date.
My goal is to offer information, perspective, treatment, and practical tools that help you better understand yourself and participate confidently in your own care.

Beyond the office
Grounded in a full life.
Outside of psychiatry, I enjoy hiking, reading, movies, and spending time with family and friends.
I also enjoy precepting and mentoring future healthcare providers, helping them develop clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and respect for the people behind the diagnoses.
